Tortoise Quarterly

Tortoise Quarterly is the first print edition of Tortoise, a news organisation 1 with the goal of slowing down the news. 2 Taking this goal as a starting point, the design of the Quarterly is closer to a book than a magazine or a newspaper. The book is 160 pages in length and includes contributions from a range of journalists, photographers and designers including Alan Kitching. This project was included in the 100 Archive 2019 selection.

  1. Tortoise was set up in 2018 by a team of journalists including James Harding, the former director of BBC and editor of the Times.

  2. As a consequence of this goal they avoid covering breaking news and instead commission long form journalism on a wide variety of themes.
